Beyond the glass the real beast lay in comfortable slumber on the sunlit step. Its broad sides rose and fell like slow waves. Sara wiped flour from her palms and studied the proofing bowl on the counter. An elastic cover of clear silicone stretched across the rim and bowed above the swollen dough. Under it, impatient bubbles pressed hard against the clear film. The entire bowl started to sway each time the floorboard flexed under her weight. She hooked one thumb beneath the glossy edge and pulled. The lid stretched like a drumhead, then sprang back, forcing her grip to slip. The bowl answered with a slow wobble, threatening to slide across a damp patch of marble. Sara braced her hip against the cabinet and shifted her angle.
