Coarse straw scratched Cal's palms as he pushed the low coop door inward. Dusty warmth met his cheeks, and a glare of late-morning sun shot through the small window above the perch bar. He wanted to count the fresh eggs inside the nesting box, yet two forces blocked his view. The first came from outside: sunlight hit the metal water trough, then bounced straight toward his eyes as a blinding reflection. The second hid inside the box itself: a deep shadow swallowed the eggs beneath layers of straw. Cal crouched, covered his face with one hand, and tried to lean closer, but the shadow only grew thicker while the white flash danced across his pupils.

A scrap from the busy marketplace lay near his boot, its glossy surface throwing smaller sparkles around the straw. The sight gave him an idea. He lifted a flat feed scoop, wiped its dull underside with his sleeve, and angled it like a tiny mirror. The fierce glare poured across the scoop and shot under the wooden lip of the box. Pale light fanned out, beating the darkness inside. Eggs emerged in a neat row; however, the redirected beam also crawled over the floor, forming a bright spot that slid toward the hens.

The curious birds charged after the moving circle, flapping so hard that feathers burst upward like confetti. Their sudden rush toppled a stack of grain sacks that had risen like a miniature skyscraper against the wall. Straw swirled into the light, and for a moment the coop looked like a distant settlement seen through a dusty vista. Outside the mesh, the tall oak landmark caught flashes of reflected sunshine. The scoop stayed propped against the box rim, and the shining spot drifted back and forth while the hens continued their lively chase.
