English 原文
A beam of late-afternoon light slid across the workbench, but Pia’s chisel paused halfway through a fresh notch. The plank on the trestles had been trimmed to length, yet its shadow still overlapped the frame by a finger’s width. Measurements had been inked in thin lines, and Wade leaned closer, blinking against the glare that bounced off sharpened blades. Frost along the small window diffused the outside glow into pale stripes, so every drifting piece of sawdust appeared bright before melting into gloom. They had sanded the edges twice; even so, the board refused to drop into place. Irritation tightened Wade’s jaw, and he tapped the underside again, hoping the outline would finally resolve.
The tap rocked the plank forward; its far corner nudged a narrow stack of cedar slats. The slats tilted, slid, and knocked a shallow dish that held a half-eaten smoked herring meant for the workshop cat. Oil on the dish caught the overhead shimmer and flashed as the china began a slow spin. The spinning rim clipped a wooden mallet, and the mallet rolled off the bench, bumping against Pia’s boot. She steadied herself, but the sudden motion scattered more sawdust through the bright shaft, and gritty specks flickered like brief sparks before falling away.
Pia lunged and caught the dish just as it reached the edge, her fingers sliding under its cool underside. The plank, relieved of pressure, slipped back again; the cedar slats rattled but stayed upright, their motion already fading. She slid the rescued dish onto a lower shelf, then pressed her shoulder against the stubborn board. This time the wood inched downward, meeting the frame with a dull thud that echoed along the dim rafters. A single droplet of herring brine swung beneath the dish, reflecting a trembling bar of light as it quivered in mid-air.
