Clara slid her backpack into the metal locker, and a puff of chalk-dry air carried a peppery smell toward her nose. She and Vance followed that dusty ribbon into the exhibition hall, where a row of ammonite fossils gave off a faint mineral tang. A wall display of layered shells aimed to foster understanding of ancient shorelines, while slim wooden pillars under a glass canopy suggested unwavering support through their clean symmetry. Near the interactive corner, a rope bridge swayed over a shallow pit fragrant with varnished pine, the structure quietly demonstrating building trust with every woven strand. Colourful ceiling banners, soaked in citrus glue, tried to raise awareness of coastal erosion; underneath them, a bronze figure appeared to extend a hand toward any passer-by, its metallic scent sharp and cold against the warm vinegar hint rising from nearby preserved seaweed samples.
Clara’s goal sat just beyond the tour group: a puzzle table piled with scented clay tiles. She reached between two elbows and nudged a cinnamon-rich square into place, but her arm brushed a dangling mobile of hollow wooden spheres. The light spheres bumped a glass jar packed with dried rosemary; the jar rocked once, then tipped against a crate of smooth river stones. Stones rolled, clinking like tiny pestles, and one struck the jar again. This second tap snapped the lid loose, and dried leaves burst out with an earthy gust. The smell spread in a widening cloud, nose-prickly and bitter, startling a girl who backed into the suspended rope bridge. The bridge dipped, sending a breath of sawdust upward that slowed the rolling stones. Vance stepped forward, braced the crate with both hands, and Clara caught the jar before it could leave the table edge. Shaken herbs kept pouring in a thin stream, but the flow now fell onto a rubber mat that muffled each landing. A ribbon of rosemary flakes spiralled through an air-conditioning vent grille above, twirling deeper into the dim corridor.
