A thin amber streak clung to the edge of the reading table—who had left it there? Reed brushed the glossy thread with a fingertip; it stayed tacky, like half-dried syrup. Beside him, Sara traced a matching stain across a chair arm, the grainy oak catching the light. They converse in whispers because the air-conditioning hum pressed every small sound against the carpeted hush. A worn paperback fable about clever forest bees lay open under Sara’s elbow, its pages warm from earlier hands. Soft footfalls crossed the aisle toward checkout, and the shelves remained still. Somewhere beyond, the closing bell stayed silent; the streak remained unexplained.

Reed followed the sticky line along the table’s underside. The trail curved down a leg, then disappeared into the carpet pile, leaving only a faint hardness where fibers had stiffened. He knelt, palms flat on the soft floor, and found another patch clinging to the skirting board’s ridged woodwork. Sara flipped the bee book shut and slid it onto the return cart; its spine nudged a thick volume on patience that rocked but held its place. Between the two books, a small glass jar rested on its side, the rim coated with more of the amber substance. Reed tipped it; a single bead rolled, heavy and sweet-smelling. Nectar, he mouthed, yet no scent of flower rose. An overhead light flickered once; the sudden dimness tightened their grip on the jar while they studied its label-free surface.

Sara tilted the bottle toward the lamp, and a sharp resin scent, not floral, drifted up. A maintenance trolley glided from the study corner, its wheels muted by carpet. A caretaker with rolled sleeves approached, holding a soft brush stained ochre. He dipped the brush into a wide tin and smoothed fresh varnish across a dent along the table edge. The jar in Reed’s hand shared the tin’s color exactly. Reed placed it on the trolley, and both stepped back, palms still tacky and streaked with gold. Behind them, the entrance panels began to glide together. A maintenance bot rolled past and lifted the empty varnish jar.
