The cloth darkened but the water slipped under his palms, cool against his knuckles, then vanished into a narrow metal conduit that ran along the baseboard. He straightened, ankles tingling from the crouch, and followed the disappearing ribbon. Conversation hummed around him; two guests paused their gentle dispute over table numbers to watch the crawling stream.

Reed traced the conduit to the bar counter, where it ended in a gap between floorboards. A fresh puddle shivered near the stool legs. He pressed fresh napkins down; they soaked through and clung to his fingers, yet the puddle only spread. When he shifted his weight, his hip nudged a tray stand. The stand wobbled, glasses clinking, balance tilting toward the edge. Pearl, lifting a jug of lemonade, caught the motion and eased the stand upright, forearms tense. Sticky drops fell from the jug, joining the original flow. Reed began to realize the spill was growing through tiny tributaries faster than he could block them.

From behind the bar, Kira—his former mentor during training—slipped a rubber doorstop from a drawer. She knelt, shoulders square, and wedged the block against the conduit’s opening. Water shifted course, bending away from the dining floor and into a thick kitchen mat that absorbed each wave. The tension in Reed’s calves eased; he pressed his palm once more and felt only damp fabric, no fresh slide. Plates resumed their quiet circuit, and the earlier dispute faded under cutlery rhythms. At the same moment, beyond the kitchen doorway, a thin ribbon of water wound past a stacked crate toward the dark drain.
