English 原文

A return cart had nudged the metal bookend an hour earlier, leaving it tilted toward the travel shelf as closing time crept closer. Pearl hurried down the carpeted aisle, the air-conditioning drone masking most whispers yet letting every tiny scrape ring out. She wanted the thick atlas on cityscape photography that always hid behind taller guides. The tilted bookend already gave a faint tinny quiver, so she braced one hand against the shelf, her eyes vigilant for another wobble.

She eased the atlas forward. Paper hissed, then the entire array of guides leaned like dominoes. A low dismal hum rose from the vibrating wood, followed by a sharper clank when the loose bookend toppled. Metal struck a decorative globe above; the sphere rattled against its stand, rolled, and knocked a pencil jar. Pencils chimed across the reading table, scattering in bright lines. Pearl lunged, caught the globe just before it could drop again, but the guides kept sliding. She pushed her shoulder under the stack, pages rustling against her ear while her breath came in short puffs. The sudden clutter dismayed a nearby stack of magazines; their plastic covers slapped against each other and skittered to the floor.

The muffled announcement about final checkout echoed from the vestibule. Pearl wedged the rescued globe between two wide encyclopedias; the pressure held, and the leaning stopped with a dull shudder. She gathered the rattling pencils, placed them back inside the jar, and tucked the atlas under her arm before walking toward the counter, footsteps soaked up by the thick rug. Behind her, one pencil she had missed began to roll, its eraser tapping softly along the groove in the table and drifting toward the far edge.
