English 原文
Someone had left the step ladder unfolded beside the map shelf, and Sara edged around it, nose catching a thread of peppery dust drifting from the ventilation grates. The requested catalog slip had been misfiled earlier, so she traced the shelf numbers through air tinged with old glue and faint vanilla from cloth bindings. A thick art book lay open on the reading table; its photograph showed a cracked, barren landscape, and even the ink carried a dry-earth scent. A small stone sculpture, Silent Discontent, waiting for repair, gave off a chalk-dry aroma near the checkout counter. From the desk lamp’s unsteady glow, she judged closing time minutes away, while the frozen catalog computer hummed with a metallic tang.
Sara struck a match to light a candle she found in the lost-property drawer, its wax smelling of sharp citrus. She cupped the flame and nestle it gently inside a clear beaker so the air-conditioner’s breath would not quench it. Citrus smoke blended with parchment musk while she searched lower shelves. A bead of molten wax slid over the rim, crept across the table, and traced a glossy path toward a wooden tray where antique carving tools waited on velvet for tomorrow’s workshop. The first slim chisel rattled, nudging a small clay cup of mint water; the cup tipped and released its cool contents.
A sweet, herb-sharp splash raced across the carpet in a thin stream. The flow slipped under the return cart wheels; the cart lurched forward, pages rustling like dry leaves. Sara planted her shoe against the lower rail, stopping the drift before the cart grazed the checkout counter. If the flow reached the atlas volumes, the edges would darken, so she folded one corner of the carpet into a low barrier that trapped the liquid in a shallow pool. Wax still oozed from the beaker lip, and a mixed scent of lemon wax and mint water drifted toward the vestibule.
