Turtle Toward the Sudden Glow-

English 原文
A tilted mop bucket, a streaked glass panel, and a damp floor sign stood under a washed-out ceiling glow beside the entrance to the observation tunnel. Pools of bluish brightness spread across the curved glass ahead, throwing long shadow-ribbons across Reed’s shoes. Inside the tank, a broad sea turtle glided near the sand, its outline dim one moment and sharply outlined the next as scattered beams slanted through the water. Reed lifted a small camera; he hoped to capture the creature before the feeding show drew a thicker crowd, yet each reflected glare on the pane blurred the screen.
Further along the tunnel a low crate rumbled by, balanced on a wheelbarrow. The gardener pushing it moved quickly, trying to reach the lobby display before visitors blocked the path. Damp frontal light from overhead bounced off the silver handles, while the red-brown soil around a single geranium cast an irregular shadow on the tunnel floor. The passing wheelbarrow briefly interrupted the tank illumination, and the turtle slipped into deeper gloom. Reed crouched, changed the angle, then rose again, but fresh glare returned as soon as he straightened. A swirling water column—part of a small “hurricane tube” exhibit beside the rail—flashed in rhythmic pulses, and those erratic bursts of brightness kept washing across the glass at the worst moments.
Just as Reed prepared a slower shutter speed, every decorative spotlight along the ceiling dimmed without warning. The hurricane tube’s pulses halted, leaving a muted afterglow that hardly reached the glass. In that new half-dark, the turtle drifted closer, its front flippers back-lit by a single emergency strip near the floor. The gardener’s wheelbarrow wheel squeaked once, then silence returned; even the bubbles in the tall tank looked darker. Reed steadied his breathing, angled the lens toward the sudden calm silhouette, and was pressing the shutter button, elbow braced against the faintly glowing rail.
