English 原文
Metal met ice with a dull hiss as a spade blade shaved a narrow ribbon from the lake’s glazed surface, releasing a faint smell of iron. Through the thin strip, a silvery curve glimmered, almost articulate in the way each ridge caught the pale light. No sooner had the sound faded than a low groan answered from deep below, the vibration trembling across Atlas’s boots. Seldom had the winter air carried such blended scents. Sweet rot clung to leaf mush frozen at the shoreline, and sharp brine hovered where wind had pressed spray against the ice days earlier. The curve beneath the glaze looked alive, like a resting fish, and its stillness insisted on closer attention.
Atlas crouched, palms burning from cold even inside wool, and traced the shape with a fingertip through the clearing he had made. The ice resisted further scraping; each pass of the spade dulled against a buried layer of grit, forcing him to relinquish speed for patience. He paused, listening to the distant chuckle of geese beyond the reeds, and wondered whether the glimmer belonged to a fish or to something older. Only when a gust carried a sudden waft of oil, probably from the boathouse rafters, did he resume. He shuffled sideways, choosing to wade through the snow ridge so the weight of his body pressed evenly. Chips lifted, flew, and scattered like shards of glass. They settled on his coat sleeves, melting into dark specks before he could brush them off.
At last, a sliver of ice cracked free, and Atlas lifted it carefully toward the gray sky. Beneath, the supposed fish revealed itself as a curved strip of tarnished tin, perhaps once part of a lantern reflector. What stopped him was the gradual metamorphosis of the smell rising from the exposed pocket below. It began with cold iron, shifted to damp earth, and ended in the unmistakable musk of lakeweed long buried. He tilted the fragment; water seeped upward through the fissure, beading and freezing in seconds, articulating tiny points that caught the light like sequins. Hardly had the last droplet crystallised when the vibration underfoot deepened, not threatening, yet reminding him how shallow confidence can be on winter ice. He considered sliding the reflector into his bag, then relinquished the idea and nudged it back into the hollow.
Snow began to move again across the open lake, fine grains riding low like smoke and quickly hiding the small cavity he had revealed. Atlas straightened, flexing fingers that tingled from the alternating cold of steel and ice. For a moment he stood still, listening to distant pops within the frozen sheet; each note echoed the unanswered questions he chose to leave beneath. The smells had shifted once more—only pine remained, its resinous edge familiar yet oddly thin in the widening dusk. No sooner did the shadow of the boathouse touch his boots than he turned toward shore. He walked away, the spade trailing a wavering line behind him.
