Coins still warm from his pocket, he fed a tumbler and noticed a faint crust of salt on the window, as though a brief squall had rubbed against the glass before blowing somewhere else.

During the interim while shirts churned, he claimed a scarred plastic chair. A father and daughter across the aisle treated the slow folding of bright towels as a quiet bonding activity, their fingertips meeting at the corners before the fabric collapsed into rectangles. Rowan lifted an old travel magazine, more habit than leisure, yet his gaze kept snagging on the far dryer: the stainless-steel drum turned, paused, then turned again, like a cough swallowed mid-sentence. Only when the fluorescent tubes flickered did he stand and walk over.

The lint trap held more than lint. Threads of deep green yarn looped around a small, brass button, the kind once stitched to wool coats. Beside it lay a single beach pebble, edges polished by water. Hardly had he brushed the pebble when a darker crescent showed inside the drum—a fine seam of damp sand ringing the metal. If the window were any clearer, he might have watched traffic light reflections ripple across that sand, yet here inside the glare flattened everything. He hesitated, palm hovering above the grit; then he cupped the pebble, placed it in his pocket, and wiped the rim with the side of his sleeve.

Now he saw echoes elsewhere: a trail of sand grains beneath each chair leg, a second button near the coin changer, even a faint smear on the detergent counter where someone had set down a wet sleeve. What stopped him was not mess but pattern—the way each mark curved gently eastward, as though a single coat had circled the room while no one looked. Laundry finished, Rowan lifted his bag and pulled the mat straight before stepping outside. The wind had calmed, yet the rectangle of cleaner tile stayed exposed, catching the last tumble of dryer-warm air as the door eased shut behind him.
