English 原文
The sharp tang of fixer drifted through the darkroom, wafting between trays and cords. A damp mark, shaped like a looping footprint, darkened the concrete just beside Wren’s boot.
Nowhere else on the floor could she find another sign of shoes, yet every few minutes a muffled creak rose from the joists, as though the building voiced a disconsolate memory. Hardly had the enlarger gone silent when another faint drip echoed; the drip joined the hum of the vent, and the room’s quiet crowd of sounds began to foster an uneasy rhythm. Gloved fingers hovered above a fresh sheet of paper, then withdrew, then returned—the first hesitation.
The footprint refused to dry. If the stain were only water, it would have vanished under the warm air that brushed her sleeves. Intuition alone could not place its source, so she slipped a tray beneath the tap, wielding the tongs like slow chopsticks to test the water’s temperature. The stream ran clear, yet the footprint deepened to a smoky grey. Gloves powdered with dust, she stooped, brushed the edge; the liquid clung, thick as syrup. A second detail emerged: a thin crescent gouge in the linoleum, perfectly aligned with the mark’s curve.
She straightened, paused, and switched off the vent; silence magnified every drip. What stopped her next was the realization that the footprint pointed toward the discarded pile of test strips near the enlarger column. She lifted one strip, tilted it under the red safelight, and an image bloomed where she expected blank emulsion—a blurred sole, heel down, toe smeared. Seldom had a failed print spoken so clearly. The mark on the floor was not an intruder’s track but her own careless overspill of developer, echoed in silver. Breathing steadier now, she made a micro-decision: continue printing with cleaner habits rather than scrub the floor just yet.
Water hissed into the sink once more, but the room held its hush. She aligned a fresh sheet, counted seconds, and slipped it into the tray. Gradually, another shoe shape rose, crisp this time, proof of control regained. She lifted the wet photograph and, with a gentle press, pinned it above the same damp mark on the concrete.
