From the snow-packed bank, Olive watched Joy kneel beside a shallow ridge on the frozen lake, fingertips hovering above the dull ice. Wind had scraped the snow into ribbed waves, and pale scratch marks darted between them like hurried handwriting. They left the tin behind, its yellow memory locked under clear ice, and turned toward the spruce fringe where the roof of the distant cottage peeked above drifts. Rarely had the hinterland felt so close; each step now threaded through grooves they finally recognized. Behind them, the ice voiced another deep note, repeating the opening groan yet carrying a softer timbre. Snow dust lifted, swirled once around the abandoned circle, then piled against the tin like unfinished handwriting waiting for thaw.

她們把鐵盒留在原地，金黃的回憶鎖在透明冰層下，轉身走向雲杉邊緣，遠處小屋屋頂剛好露出雪堆。後方的冰層再次發出深沉低鳴，重複開頭那聲嘶嘆，卻添了柔和色調。雪塵揚起，環繞廢棄圓圈旋舞一周，隨後堆積在鐵盒旁，像未完的筆跡等待解凍。
