Beyond the taut white screen, light from an oil lamp carved crisp silhouettes that seemed to breathe. At each swell of the music, the outlines of birds expanded, then dissolved into softer clouds when the puppeteer pulled them farther from the cloth. Rarely had Max stood so close to the glowing sheet without performing; he watched as one winged figure blurred until its feather tips began to unravel like smoke. What stopped him was the smell of warm oil mixing with dust, a scent that echoed long afternoons spent mending rods.

His fingertips still carrying lamp-soot, he reached for the vintage dragon. The rod stuck in a splintered groove and refused to slide free, silk threads catching against rough wood. If the rod were any longer, it would pierce the screen, so he tilted the handle instead of yanking. The shadow that leapt onto the cloth surprised him: broad-shouldered, dignified, nothing like the patched leather in his hand. Mae appeared beside him, moving with the quiet precision of a curator arranging relics. She steadied the lamp while he inched the puppet closer, and the creature’s outline thickened, gaining an unexpected mystique.

Hardly had the audience’s applause faded when Max hesitated; he could press the dragon forward for grandeur or draw it back into modest blur. A breath later, he chose restraint, letting the silhouette hover in a middle distance where sharp edges met gentle haze. The two shadows—his hand and the dragon—merged, then parted as the music waned. With threads again slack, he stepped away, looped the thin cord over the brass nail, and left the leather dragon hanging beside the screen’s pale afterglow.

觀眾掌聲剛落，麥克遲疑了；他可以把龍推得更近以求壯闊，或拉遠讓邊緣柔和。他呼吸一頓，選了克制，讓影子停在銳利與朦朧交界之間。隨著音樂漸弱，他的手影與龍影交融又分離。絲線再度鬆弛後，他退開一步，把細繩扣回黃銅釘上，留下那條皮革龍懸在幕旁淡淡的光後影中。
