Hazel lingered beside a column, half hidden from the glow behind the cloth screen. Rarely had the hall breathed such a careful hush; even the wooden beams seemed to wait. On the bright side of the screen a paper heron appeared, its long legs bending as though testing a perch, while the muffled creak of its rod echoed above the chairs. Another silhouette followed: a squat wharf, edged by cardboard ripples that shimmered whenever the oil lamp flickered. Each new outline sharpened, blurred, then sharpened again, and Hazel counted the beats of the puppeteer’s rhythm the way she once counted wingbeats during birdwatching dawns along the estuary.

She slipped behind the hanging cloth, heat from the lamp brushing her cheek. The puppeteer had stepped away, leaving a jumble of figures leaning against a crate. A strip of driftwood, tiny enough to fit her palm, lay among them, a memento of some forgotten shoreline; a faint inscription crossed its grain, letters worn almost flat. Hazel reached for the heron figure, lifted it, and the thin rod wobbled. Hardly had she steadied her grip when the lamp coughed, sending the shadow collapsing into a swollen blur. Her wrist still tingling, she angled the bird higher, experimenting with distance until its beak regained a keen point.

Returning to the audience side, she watched the transformed silhouette. Now the bird appeared enormous, wings half spread, as if wind pressed from the unseen sea toward the screen. Yet something jarred: the rhythm she had measured earlier ran uneven, the pauses longer, the creaks lighter. A moment passed before she realised the puppeteer had not returned; the stage waited for her alone. She stepped back once, paused, then moved forward again, letting the rod dip so the heron examined the paper wharf, neck looping down in slow inquiry. No sooner had the tip touched the drawn waterline than the lamp’s flame steadied, and a hush rolled through the rafters like breath held too long.

Sound emerged first: a distant murmur from the corridor, then the soft clang of metal folding as a late breeze nudged the unused chairs. Hazel lowered the puppet, re-entered the shadowed space behind the screen, and replaced the heron among the others. What stopped her hand was the driftwood strip; she slid it upright between two larger figures, its pale edge now catching the lamp’s glow. Stepping out to the column again, she heard the hush resume, and the newly upright sliver cast a slim, stubborn line across the cloth that she had not noticed when she first arrived.

她回到觀眾席側，凝望那已變形的剪影。此刻鳥影巨大，半展翅膀，似有海風正面壓來。但節奏有異：先前維持的間隔被拉長，嘎吱聲也變輕。操偶人尚未回來；舞台只等她一人。她退半步停住，又前行，讓杆尖下降，彷彿鷺鷥低頭探看紙碼頭。尖喙觸及畫出的水線之際，燈焰平穩下來，大梁間彷彿有人長舒一口氣。

聲音率先回來：走廊遠處的低語，其後是折疊椅受微風觸動的輕叮。海茲爾收起人偶，重返幕後，將它歸位。她的手在漂流木前停住，便把木片直立夾在較大的偶像之間，使蒼白木邊捕捉到燈光。她再度走到柱邊，聽見靜意回覆，而那直立的細影在布幕上留下一道纖細而倔強的線條——初到時她根本沒有注意到。
