English 原文
Every morning Bea lowered a length of cotton into the sunken vat, letting the cloth slide beneath the almost-black surface until nothing remained in sight. Seldom had the workshop smelled so strongly of fermented leaves; an alkaline edge clung to the splintered planks. The routine felt mechanical, yet today a faint tremor ran through the iron hook above the vat, wobbling as if uncertain of its own grip. Bea steadied it with two fingers, noticing a thin line of rust creeping around the bolt like a slow bruise. Her cherished apron bore similar stains, the once-white ties now patched with overlapping blue fingerprints that mapped seasons of work.
Minutes later she tried to raise the cotton, but the loosened hook snagged a corner, slicing a shallow tear along the wet weave. Her sleeves already damp, Bea threaded a thin needle, intent on mending the split before the air turned the yellow-green cloth indigo. Were the tear any wider, thick dye would soon drip across the wooden floorboards. Ned, shoulders dusted with lint, stepped from the storage alcove and offered extra thread. Without a word they share a laugh at the sight of her slippery fingers chasing the tiny eye. Their meticulous planning for even gradations dissolved into hurried improvisation as oxidation deepened every exposed fibre to blue.
The more carefully she tried to mend, the slower the fabric emerged, and the colour darkened unevenly; solving the tear worsened the shade. A sudden drop of water slipped from a cracked roof beam, landing on the half-dyed cloth. The gentle impact quietly left a pale bloom amid the still deepening indigo hues. Ned suggested twisting the cloth so the mark might echo along the length, turning accident into pattern. The proposal carried risk, yet the imbalance already declared itself; Bea pivoted, twisting, dipping, lifting in short breaths so air and liquid traded places along the spiral folds.
When they finally pinned the damp spiral on the wooden rack, streaks of graduated blue ran beside speckled echoes of the falling drop. The cloth carried both problems at once: the stitch near the edge and the drifting blossom of pale colour. Bea stepped back, the vat once more still behind her, and a faint creak from the loosened hook answered the quiet air. The unexpected indigo motif, spreading like a quiet flower, might never fit the order. Yet the imbalance framed a memorable moment on the dyehouse floor, one that would settle into the timber smell long after the last shade dried.
