What the Oil Exposed-

English 原文
Bram drove the winding handle another quarter turn, the iron teeth clicking while the great lens groaned above his head and flung light across the black water. Salt dust scratched his knuckles, yet the routine stayed steady, almost rhythmic, like pages riffing during an intermission between acts. A thermos waited on a narrow shelf; steam curled from its spout, promising the mild caffeine boost that would energize the rest of his shift. He rolled one shoulder, trying to motivate stiff muscles before they locked, then leaned nearer the gears to listen for the thin tick he always counted between revolutions.
He straightened, expecting the familiar metallic pulse; nothing followed the lens’s sigh, only wind nudging the windowpanes. Hardly had the beam swept eastward when the room settled into a rare hush. What stopped him mid-step was the missing brass oil can that normally rested beside the thermometer. The shelf showed a dark ring, its center clean, and a faint skid mark stretched toward the maintenance hatch. Bram set the thermos down, his grip easing, then lifted the hatch with care, a brainstorm of small mechanical guesses fluttering like paper scraps under a ceiling fan. Thin moonlight, dulled by salt, splashed across the floor.
The space below revealed only a coil of rope and settled dust, though a thin line of oil threaded away across the copper floor plates. He followed it around the pivot column, noting a chain of stains, each lighter than the last, as if the trail lost heart with distance. He noted, too, how the rope fibres had stiffened, their edges crusted white with years of blown spray. Nowhere on the balustrade could he find fresh droplets. Still, on the inward face of a strut, a scratched compass rose gleamed where the oil had wiped the tarnish clean. The symbol waited beneath grime for years, metal facing the sea as steadily as the beam itself.
He worked a rag into the grooves until the points of the rose shone. Then he reached behind the strut and retrieved the can, its cap hanging by a thread of wire. Shoulder and jaw loosened as the lens resumed its slow pulse; the missing tick slid back into the room. If the room were any quieter, the hush might have overlapped the foghorn outside, yet the renewed groan already filled the space. He tightened the cap, left the drink untouched, and stepped slowly toward the stairs. The next rotation passed without a groan, and the winding handle rested warm against his open palm.
