English 原文
Blake stepped over the low stone sill into the water mill’s dim interior, the wheel’s muffled pulse greeting him. He had slipped through this same doorway on countless quiet afternoons, confident enough to navigate even with his eyes half-closed. Today, though, a faint change fluttered behind the familiar rhythm: flour dust rose more slowly, and the belt sagged near the pulley. Outside, hillside fields promised they would soon yield a crop, yet inside the mill, preparation felt oddly stalled. His sleeve already carried white specks; he moved along the plank walkway toward the hopper. The usual clang of the grain scoop against its iron hook never came today.
Seldom had the wheel sounded so hesitant, each rotation ending with a soft wobble instead of the crisp clap Blake remembered. He halted, boots balanced on a beam, and scanned the wall where the long-handled scoop normally waited; only a pale rectangle of unstained oak remained. Beside that rectangle stood three small notches, a quiet ledger the miller once cut to keep realistic goals in sight. Clear the chute, sharpen the stones, dry the sacks—the sequence repeated itself in his memory. Hands still dusted white, he traced the fresh notch and frowned when his fingertip met a bead of water that did not belong.
He crouched, followed the damp grainy path toward the wall, and paused halfway, unsure whether to fetch towels or keep tracking. After a breath, curiosity overruled haste; he sidestepped between gears where trickles slipped along grooves carved by seasons of drip, proof that persistence pays off even for water. At the groove’s end, daylight poured through a loose plank, illuminating a carving he had never really seen: intertwining roots encircling a tiny sapling. The design lay above head height, weathered into near invisibility, yet the mingled lines still conveyed slow motion, as if the timber under bark continued to grow. His hand lifted, hovered, then retreated; the scoop mattered less now than the silent story rising above the wheel.
He backed toward the doorway, the wheel’s measured shake matching the knot tightening in his stomach. On the threshold he glanced once more; water slanted through the gap, guiding its own repair, and the mill kept turning with diligent patience. Outside, he crossed the yard toward the bright fields, a warm breeze lifting flour dust from his cuffs. Inside the mill, water kept pulsing through the worn groove, tapping the plank with a patient rhythm. Above it, the carving of intertwining roots glimmered faintly each time the wheel sent a gleam across the stone-dark wall.
