The Creature That Shifted in Warm Water-

English 原文
From a higher ledge, Hugo watched a pale salamander paddle across the glassy center of the hot spring; steam bent around its back like slow‐moving banners. The creature’s easy strokes disturbed a mixed bag of mineral colors—white near the vent, mustard farther out, rust along the rim—that he had traced with confident pencil lines only an hour earlier. Notebook balanced on his knee, he tried to carve out fresh space for another sketch, yet ripples kept shifting the boundaries he thought fixed. At the edge, cooled water gathered stray reeds and leaf clutter, and he nodded, certain that every layer, every tint, followed a tidy rule he would capture before dusk.
Seldom had the pool stayed so calm. The salamander vanished beneath the mineral shelf, and silence pressed in, broken only when air bubbles pulsed upward, rolled, and burst. Hugo leaned forward until warm rock met his elbows; there, under the thin line where clear water turned cloudy, the shape reappeared—longer, jointed, somehow segmented. "Still you," he whispered, though the water now shimmered as though it were breathing differently. Hardly had he blinked when the form flipped, exposing what looked like ridged plates instead of velvet skin, and he drew back, unsure whether his eyes or the spring had rearranged truth.
What drew him closer was the creature’s motion, not its shape. It sculled sideways, then upward, meeting his reflection before drifting off, and in that mirrored crossing they seemed to forge a quiet truce: he would not reach, it would not flee. Hugo slid down the ledge, soles skimming patches of damp stone. As he entered the shallows, convection tugged softly at his calves, masking depth. He paused, weighing if curiosity merited wet boots; momentum won, and he stepped until knees warmed. When their paths crossed again beneath his shadow, the creature’s limbs unfolded like miniature oars—no salamander at all but an immense dragonfly nymph, armored and patient, sculpted by the very minerals he had presumed only painted the bottom.
Hugo stalled mid‐stride; the realization wobbled inside him the way heat pockets rocked the surface. The neat pattern filling his notebook now felt provisional, lines awaiting revision. Around him, overflow channels pulsed, releasing thin threads of warm water downhill, rhythms he had overlooked earlier. He lifted one boot, let it drain, then stayed where he was, studying the nymph’s slow oscillation. Without another mark on the page, Hugo crouched lower and let his open palm hover just above the nymph.
