The Mark on the Rope-

English 原文
A ribbon of damp gray freckled the fresh hemp, and the streak curved like handwriting across three twisting strands—who had left a mark so dark in a room that smelled of warm oil and straw?
Yesterday’s light sat elsewhere: on the long bench near the sluice, a jar of squid ink had slipped from a shelf. The artisan who mixed dyes for sailcloth knelt, the ink already wicking through floor cracks. His gloves, exuberant with black sheen, left fingerprints on every bucket he touched. The air thickened with brine and iron, and hemp dust clung to the spill, forming a thin crust before anyone crossed the walk.
Seldom had the ropewalk smelled so sharp. Sage lifted the stained section; fibers came together under the steady counter-twist, yet the blot resisted, dull and sticky. A reed-sweet scent, not marine, drifted upward, and an oriole flashed through the rafters, a fleck of orange against the beams. She paused, palm hovering; the jar incident could not explain this resin tang. Her sleeve brushed the rope, and a crumb of pitch flaked free—ink had never reached this spot.
The hooks still turned, rope tightening behind her, the distant creak rising. The jar already shattered, she had cleaned what she could, but here stood a fresher trace carried, perhaps, by that bright bird gathering sap for a nest. Were the stain truly ink, the smell would have soured by now, she told herself, stepping back until tension hummed along the line. She weighed cutting the blemished length or trusting the twist to bury it; her fingers settled on the rough coil, and the oriole settled too, tilting its head at the same mute question.
