English 原文
The porcelain mug usually sat beside the lamp; this morning it balanced upside-down, a bead of tea darkening the rim and releasing a faint sweet-rot scent that drifted across the paper stack. Nowhere on the pale desktop could Ned find a dry patch untouched by aroma—cedar from the drawer, resin from the lamp’s heated arm, and that damp tang from the stray drop. He brushed a square of heritage stock across his palm, its surface cool and clean, yet the conundrum of the inside reverse fold waited: one wrong valley crease would scar the sheet forever.
He charted the first diagonal, fingernail pressing until the paper snapped into a sharp ridge. Were the crease narrower, the wings would flare cleanly, yet each adjustment threatened the fiber’s integrity. A bone folder—its wooden edge polished smooth—became his chosen tool, but the fold still skewed a millimetre left. The lamp breathing quietly, Ned set the flawed crane aside. A second, then a third attempt followed, their beaks crumpled, their bellies thick with unintended layers. He exhaled against the growing bouquet of warmed paper and cooled frustration before rising, shoulders stiff.
At the sink he tipped the inverted mug upright, let water swirl, and watched pale foam climb the porcelain. The new smell—citrus and iron from the tap—overlaid the desk’s cedar haze. Fingers kneaded the soaked cloth around the cup; the motion echoed the mountain folds he had forced moments earlier. Without planning, he flattened one discarded crane under the damp towel, a small act of reclamation that softened its rigid lines. When he peeled the towel away, a ghost of the original square emerged, fibers whispering possibilities where stiffness had ruled. His thumb followed a damp groove that curved rather than angled, suggesting a hidden path through the paper’s memory.
Back at the desk, he chose a fresh sheet. The room held its layered perfume: cedar, resin, sweet rot, and now a cool mineral trace. He folded once, then again, guiding the paper along the curved groove he had felt in the wet pulp. Each step locked into place without protest, until a crane rested under the lamp, wings level, neck poised. A calendar page half-tucked under the desk blotter—saved since the vernal equinox—bore the same pale green as the crane’s wings; it had been there earlier, yet only now did its color draw his gaze. The lamp’s resin scent thinned, leaving air that smelled purely of new paper.
