English 原文
From the threshold, Wren watched the indigo vat lie still beneath a slant of late-afternoon light, as if the liquid held its breath along with him. Seldom had the tall doorway cut such a sharp rectangle across the packed-earth floor; it outlined dust that hovered like fine cloth fibres waiting their turn. Every board, hook, and beam sat exactly where he expected, yet the scene wore a subtler face: faint rust on the pulley, darker stains beneath the racks, and a row of drying lengths arranged in shades he did not recognize. The place had been his routine once, a map he could walk with eyes closed, so the unfamiliar gradation coaxed him forward. He counted the dips on the nearest sheet—seven—yet remembered preparing only six before he last locked the shutters.
He stepped onto the planks, the shift from warm doorway to vat-cool air brushing his forearms. His sleeves still rolled, he gripped the wooden tongs and drew up a submerged bolt of cloth; water streamed back with a hollow splatter, and the fabric hung yellow-green for a moment before breath from the open window stirred it. Patches began to bloom blue, travelling in a labyrinthine web that spread faster along creases where the fibre thinned. A single palm-sized mark, deeper than the rest, sat near the edge—an imprint too precise to be accident. He set the cloth across the rack and reached for the mallet that once tightened its joints, only to find dents on the handle that told of recent blows he hadn’t made.
He tapped the loose dowel, expecting the familiar echo, yet the wood answered with a tired thud that seemed to deconstruct his earlier certainty about untouched order. The rack listed; a damp sleeve brushed his cheek; drops spattered onto the planks, and light glare shifted until it appeared to overwhelm the dyes laid in shallow bowls nearby. A second cloth came up heavier than memory, water weighing its folds. Halfway through wringing it he paused, weight resting on one foot, eyes tracing the blue palm again. Were the vat a little fuller, that mark would sink beneath the surface, vanish, and return unprovoked; instead it stayed, darkening, insisting on some story he could not name.
He eased the cloth back into the liquid, deciding against another dip for now, and walked toward the doorway, shoulders brushing beams he once varnished bright. Outside, glare bounced from pale paving stones; inside, the vat lay in shade again, its surface smoothing over the brief disturbance. He turned once, then the doorway swallowed his outline. Drops kept falling into the vat, ticking against the dark surface. On the rack, the cloth showed a blue palm-shaped imprint, deepening with each passing breath of air.
