English 原文
Digging toes into the rippled sand, Fern steadied herself and bent toward a shallow groove that zig-zagged between two puddles. Another, fainter line branched away, and then another, as if something thin-clawed had sketched hurried paths before the tide retreated. She trailed a finger along the nearest mark; mud curled up like chocolate shavings. Rarely had the flats carried so many overlapping stories at once, yet each curve remained crisp where the upper sand stayed firm. To ward the quick glare of sun bouncing from the water, she tilted her cap lower, then noted how every pool mirrored the same pattern: converging scratches, always pointing toward the leaning marker post. A curlew’s plaintive whistle rolled across the open space, soft but insistent, the sound sliding under her attention like a reminder she could not translate.
She crouched and lifted a driftwood slat caught on kelp, hoping its shadow would sharpen the tracks beneath; instead the plank’s weight pressed fresh dents that blurred the older lines. Mud-filtered water seeped through, clouding the groove. Her cuffs already damp, she set the slat aside and paused; each attempt to protect the trace only erased it. Hermit crabs, infinitely adaptable, began climbing the improvised bridge, their borrowed shells clacking together and scraping off more sand. The first problem—reading the trail—now tangled with a second: every movement meant further loss. A gull swung overhead and, with a rasp of vexation, dropped a fragment of clam that shattered beside her boot, splattering grey droplets across the groove. She rocked back on her heels, walked three short steps toward the shore, then turned and resumed; a small decision, yet the flats felt different after it.
With silt still circling, she nudged the exposed nail sideways, then stepped back toward the dry ridge. For several heartbeats, the water held its swirl. Silence, save for the faint rush at the horizon, followed her retreat. Footprints stretched behind her, already softening as the surface dried; each oval mark lightened by degrees, as though the ground practised forgetting. Pale bubbles gathered where the clay lay thinner, bursting with tiny pops that echoed the drumbeat of her receding steps. Near the leaning post, the driftwood ramp remained propped, and sea lettuce tried to cultivate a foothold beneath it, the fronds twitching with each ripple. Clear water slid down the ramp’s edge, tapped the nail, and left a tiny whirlpool. A swallow shadow crossed and vanished. The nail rocked twice and settled, a dark spark on the bright sand.
