English 原文
From the hallway threshold, Eve watched Suki steady the turning stand with two square palms while the brush ghosted over a half-finished bowl. The lacquer workshop seemed unchanged—cedar walls beaded with moisture, the faint drip in the curing cabinet, and that resinous scent she could locate even blindfolded—yet something subtle pressed against her expectation. The granite burnishing stone that normally nested beside the water tray was nowhere on the low shelf. Eve lingered another breath, cataloguing light angles, gloss levels, even the hush of horsehair bristles. On the top shelf, a finished platter, its rim painted with cranes frozen in crimson triumph, caught the same incandescent glimmer that pulsed and vanished, as though the very surface withheld the next sentence.
She crossed the floor, nodded toward Suki, and set her lidded box on the bench. Hardly had the latch clicked when the stand creaked; an uneven glare caught her attention. Gloves pulled tight, she floated the brush across her piece, yet the stroke broke into tiny ridges. Lacquer that once flowed like syrup now resisted, thickened by minutes of unseen drying. Were the humidity lower, the coat would haze, so she checked the tray—water sat correct, but some quiet intrigue curled in every reflection. Brush still dripping, she laid it aside, drew a cotton pad, and rubbed the ridges, yet the grain refused to disappear. The routine faltered, and she stepped back.
The block of time needed airing, so she crouched at the curing cabinet to refill the clay basin. Condensation rolled over the granite lip of the tray, cool against her wrist. She emptied a pitcher, then wiped the scattered droplets with coarse cloth whose only merit lay in its stubborn grip. As she worked, concentric waves crossed the shallow water; an insect had tapped the surface once, setting motion across the stillness. Rings of incandescent light skated up the cedar slats, rose over the stand, and settled on her stalled bowl, mapping every ridge she had tried to erase. Her fingers froze mid-wipe; water kept moving.
Eve lifted the bowl and tilted it into that borrowed shimmer. The ridges aligned with each moving ring until the pattern clarified—not flaws, but a subtle relief carving that decades of polishing had kept too shallow to notice. Suki’s brush paused, as if acknowledging nothing at all, and resumed its slow orbit. Eve placed the bowl inside the cabinet, closed the door, and collected the absent burnishing stone from the windowsill without comment. She left it where it now belonged, then walked toward the corridor. Behind her, water in the basin whispered against granite, each ripple dimming to glass.
