English 原文
As always at first light, Reed stepped from the granite shore onto the frozen lake, the burlap seed sack bumping his knee with familiar rhythm. The dachshund trotted ahead, nose low, long body skimming the crusted snow like a rusty skater. Yet a fine amber sheen lay over the ice this morning, and the mirror beneath him echoed every motion with unsettling clarity. Rarely had the dawn light stretched so flat across the lake, erasing horizon and sky alike, so Reed paused, shifted his weight, and continued. Each boot squeak left a white crescent; each dog claw etched a second, slimmer curve beside it.
A faint soprano ring rose from the depths, followed by a contralto groan, then another, until the sounds formed a fragile chord beneath their feet. Reed marked the first vibration as harmless; the second registered as curious; the third, undeniable, vibrated through his shins. In the spreading glare he saw trapped bubbles, paw-print half-moons, and thin radial scratches, all aligned in odd synergy, as though the lake were sketching a pattern around the pair. His gloves already damp, Reed knelt to scatter seed, but the burlap corner caught a snow ridge, tilting the sack and letting grain trickle away in a loose ribbon that the wind erased almost immediately.
He reached to gather the spilled seed, then stopped; the ice hummed a deeper note and trembled, not dangerous, yet persuasive enough to freeze his hands mid-air. All he could measure was the faint hum under his boots, breath stalling in the cold. Responsibility lingered in that moment like an invisible weight, neither order nor warning, simply present beside the blank shine. A bronze memento—an old watch back he carried for luck—slipped from his pocket, spun once on the glass, and skittered toward a slight fissure; his dachshund barked at the glint, dark ears flapping, nails chattering on the surface. Reed lunged sideways, knees bending, angle low, intercepting the tiny disc before it reached the crack.
Knees protesting, he steadied himself, but the abrupt shift had upended the sack completely. Seed fanned across the glare like scattered pepper, followed by a small tin containing yesterday’s unfinished trifle; the tin slid, stopped at a ridge of powdered snow, and settled. Had the ice been smoother, both tin and seed would have drifted farther, yet the shallow ridge held them. Reed gathered the dog under one arm, straightened, and decided the scattered offering could remain; the birds would claim it soon enough. As he stepped back toward the granite, the watch back stayed in his closed fist while the sunrise caught the distant tin, its lid flashing once before the light thinned into simple grey.
