He reached to gather the spilled seed, then stopped; the ice hummed a deeper note and trembled, not dangerous, yet persuasive enough to freeze his hands mid-air. All he could measure was the faint hum under his boots, breath stalling in the cold. Responsibility lingered in that moment like an invisible weight, neither order nor warning, simply present beside the blank shine. A bronze memento—an old watch back he carried for luck—slipped from his pocket, spun once on the glass, and skittered toward a slight fissure; his dachshund barked at the glint, dark ears flapping, nails chattering on the surface. As he stepped back toward the granite, the watch back stayed in his closed fist while the sunrise caught the distant tin, its lid flashing once before the light thinned into simple grey.
