English 原文
A soft creak traveled through the frost-thick window frame, as though the wood sighed beneath the sharp morning cold. Across the pane, fern-shaped ice unfurled from a clear spot no larger than a coin; inside that spot, daylight condensed into a pale star. Only after the second creak did Rafe stir in the armchair pulled close to the sill, the quilt around his shoulders lifting with a small rustle. He listened—nothing except the steady hum of the stove across the room answered back. Were the pane any thinner, the room would echo louder, and he pressed a fingertip to the glass. The frost recoiled in a perfect ring, water beading at its edge with the quiet insistence of clock ticks.
On the low table beside the chair lay his quiet morning project, untouched since dawn’s first light. Pebbles were sorted by shade, each hue separated from the next across a saucer. A split geode held violet crystals in one half, while the other lay bare and gray. Beside them waited a strip of old pillowcase, its cotton worn to gauze and embroidered with heartfelt stitches. He began to assemble the fragments, nudging each into a loose circle on the scratched tabletop. Yet the materials kept slipping in odd rhythms—pebble to stoneware plate with a tap, crystal to wood with a faint chime. Each sound layered upon the stove’s muted rumble until the room became a quiet orchestra. When a pebble rolled away, he paused, knuckles whitening around the tweezers, then chose another shard and continued.
Meanwhile, the frostbound window produced its own slow music across the morning hush. A drip formed at the melted ring, slid downward, and froze; then another gathered, heavier, until surface tension broke. Hardly had the droplet landed when a brittle ping echoed between glass and sill. Rafe’s shoulders lifted; he waited, uncertain whether the noise came from the frame or from his little mosaic. Fingers chilled, he set the tweezers down and rose, eyes level with the peephole he had cleared. Outside, the garden fence stood silent, yet new frost already marched across the glass, knitting the opening shut grain by grain. He breathed on the pane, watched fog bloom, and for a heartbeat did nothing at all.
The pause ended when he noticed the geode half gleaming where the fallen droplet had splashed. What he had taken for dull quartz now sparkled, every point flashing indigo under the shifting light. It was the muted ping from the sill that created the angle, tilting the split stone just enough to reveal its secret planes. Rafe loosened the quilt, crossed back to the table, and rearranged the layout: cloth first, crystals next, darker pebbles encircling them like night around a campfire. One fragment of embroidery snagged and tore, yet he said nothing; the design would cover the loss. At last, he placed the awakened geode on the windowsill, where new frost briefly mirrored its jagged shine.
