The Tune Beneath the Brass-

English 原文
Delia steadied the brass cylinder between her palms and let it rotate under the loupe, the desk lamp’s warmth brushing her knuckles. She knew every groove on this workbench, every faint scent of machine oil that usually cooled in the winter air; tonight, however, a damp heat clung to the room, as though someone had left the lamp burning longer than usual. Seldom had the brass surface looked so dull: a fine mist of polish clouded its shine, disguising the pattern of pins she believed she had memorised. Theo, leaning against the shelf, blew on his fingertips and exhaled a silver thread of breath—evidence that the edges of the room remained chilled despite the lamp’s soft pool.
She wound the mainspring once, twice, and the melody began—three notes bright, the fourth oddly pensive, the rhythm slightly late. Her certainty slipped. What unsettled her was the languid stretch between notes, a tiny lag that never occurred before. Nowhere on the shelf could she see the tuning forks she usually tapped for reference, so she lifted a finished box instead. Its lid carried a blot of nightshade-purple dye, dried long ago when a berry had burst across the grain, and that forgotten stain drew her attention while the tune cycled again, slower. She paused, thumb resting on the stop lever; the pause lengthened when she noticed one pin seated half a millimetre deeper than its neighbours.
His fingers still damp from polishing, Theo offered the pin-setting tool without a word. Delia accepted, yet she did not press the metal immediately. Had the cylinder been shorter, the deviation might never have emerged; the extra rows allowed the fault to echo. With the loupe in place, she adjusted two pins, then let the spring run. A second line of music surfaced—faint, like an echo concealed beneath the first—an invitation she had never answered, though it had always spun there. The revelation did not resolve the drag; it simply revealed that the original melody wore a secret harmony, quiet and constant.
She rewound the key once more and closed the lid. The purr of gears subsided, leaving only the lamp’s gentle hum. On her way out she brushed the doorframe and felt its paint, warm on the side nearest the lamp, cool on the far side—a detail she had touched countless times yet never measured until now.
