A low hum from the air-conditioner rolled above the softer shuffles of shoes. Bea, seated beside him, skimmed a clipboard; the pen scratched, then slipped, tapping once on the linoleum before sliding beneath a chair. Heath slid the clipboard under the seat for leverage, but its edge bumped the metal leg. The leg rang like a small bell, jolting a wire magazine rack. Magazines slid down in a dry thunder, their pages flapping until the stack thudded against the ticket dispenser’s stem.

The stem vibrated, and the numbered roll whirred free. Paper curled across the floor, rustling toward the hallway where every footfall carried urgency toward closed exam-room doors. Bea stepped forward; her heel pinned the paper, halting the hiss yet jerking the dispenser stand. Loose screws—its usability had been reduced by years of impatient hands—let the frame tilt. The tilt yanked the desk phone line that looped around its base; tension in the coiled cord snapped tight, stopping the stand from falling further and flinging a miserable wad of dropped tissues off the counter instead. They fluttered harmlessly onto a plastic plant, ending the clatter cascade. Voices around them dipped, then rose again, a rising and falling buzz that filled the gap left by the silenced roll.

A staff member replaced the rack and nodded at Heath; no one spoke of blame. The old ticket with number forty-two lay creased beneath scattered magazines, so Heath tore a fresh piece—fifty-eight—its edges rasping. He and Bea returned to the same two chairs; magazines that had been stacked now lay in uneven layers, their corners still quivering each time the air-conditioner cycled. The dispenser that had stood upright earlier now leaned on one bent foot, its wheel still spinning across the linoleum.
