English 原文
Grains streamed from a burlap sack of quinoa, and Reed cupped his hand beneath the sudden ribbon—how had the vendor closed the spout before it burst? A thick seashell, glossy and cream-pink, lay stuck in the neck of the sack. He tugged at the shell, yet its ridged lip bit into the cloth and refused to twist free. Turmeric fumes floated nearby, dusty and warm, while crushed bay leaves on the neighboring scale released a peppery edge that pricked his nose. Behind Reed, Delia waited with an empty paper bag; a small plush koala dangled above her shoulder, swinging gently from the striped awning and carrying the faint wool smell of toy stalls farther down the lane. Reed had tried once already to wrench the shell away, but each shake only deepened the wedged curve.
A sharp wind ran along the lane, lifting coriander powder into the air. The gust rattled light jars, toppled a scoop, and, as the shell finally loosened, poured a pale cascade of quinoa across the wooden counter. The grains behaved like dry sand, hissing toward a jar of pickled lemons; a splash of sour brine leapt out and left a vinegar-sharp streak across the boards. Delia blocked the spreading stream with her forearm, eyes watering from the tang. If the seashell had been lighter, it would have bounced away in the gust, but its heavy, hollow body remained within reach. Reed noticed the shell’s deep bowl—exactly the depth a customer might need. He flipped it upright; the inner surface still smelled of salt and carried a cool mineral taste when the first grains struck it. The shell, once an obstacle, now formed a natural measure.
Delia steadied the paper bag while Reed scooped. Each dip filled the shell to its rim, about the portion the recipe on their phone required. He had lifted three rounded shells of grain before the counter finally cleared, leaving only the sour track from the brine and a few stray seeds near the koala’s swinging paws. Fine quinoa continued to slide along the seashell’s inner curve into the waiting bag.
