Cool fluorescent beams drew silver stripes along the queue stand, and a grey tabby crouched beside the security gate, whiskers twitching at each low beep from the checkout counter. Reed came to locate the coastal atlas his geography worksheet described. Closing time announcements had echoed once, leaving perhaps twenty quiet minutes. The visitor at the terminal kept scrolling; blue-grey light flickered across their fingers while the queue stayed frozen. Reed shifted weight from heel to toe, rolling the unused ticket between thumb and knuckle, and breathed the faint nostalgia that hung between rows of frost-white shelves. Persistence held his place, but the wall clock’s steel hands crept forward with steady certainty.

As another ticket slid from the dispenser, a cart rattled past, stacked with atlases ready for shelving. The uppermost volume—‘Routes through the Northern Hinterland’—bobbed on the heap; its cloth spine had begun to unravel, loose threads brushing the steel-grey frame. Reed left the queue and shadowed the cart into a narrow aisle. If he had kept waiting for the terminal, the lights would have dimmed before any search even started. He reached for the atlas, but a staff member lifted it first and nudged a rolling step-stool under the high shelf. The stool was already occupied by the library cat, stretched long across the cool vinyl platform, tail flicking with reserved dignity. Reed hesitated and then noticed a wide drawer beneath the adjacent map cabinet, left ajar after the cart’s wheel bumped it; a pale trace of blue ink curled from a folded chart partly exposed.

He eased the drawer wider, letting the fluorescent glow wash over stacks of translucent regional maps. The cat hopped down, landing without noise and nosing the crunchy paper edges. Reed unfolded a sheet; the river he needed shimmered in thin cobalt lines, sharper than any printed atlas plate. Lights in the far wing faded in sequence, pressing for speed, yet the chart’s clarity rewarded the changed plan. He carried it toward the copier queue, aiming to duplicate it before the final bell. Behind him, the cat swiped at the dangling atlas thread until a single stitch snapped free and drifted onto the carpet unnoticed.
