The house cat—plump, mottled, and officially tolerated by staff—trotted beside her, its tail brushing Finn’s calf like a soft rope. Ruby noticed Finn’s half-folded slip and raised an eyebrow in silent question; her free hand tilted the slip toward the rolling reshelving cart parked near the threshold of the art wing. Finn followed, knees bending to match her crouch as they scanned the cart’s upper tray. The missing volume lay there, wedged under a lighter pamphlet on originality in design. Ruby steadied the cart while Finn reached, forearm muscles tightening to lift the heavy book. At that moment the cat leaped onto the metal edge, its weight rocking the cart sideways. The jolt knocked a paperback loose, but it also pried the art volume clear enough for Finn to draw it out without straining a shoulder.

The self-checkout scanner rejected the damaged barcode, so Ruby and Finn carried the book to the front counter together, pages fluttering against their thumbs like slow wings. If the final lights went out, he would need to leave empty-handed, yet the clerk had already begun manual entry, a routine step in the library playbook. Finn had planned a solo search; the cat’s sudden vault became the unlikely catalyst, and Ruby’s steady grip finished the rescue. When they set the stamped volume on the reading table, a faint vibration from the closing elevator doors lingered in the hushed air.
