English 原文
Sam’s travel card had failed once already at the evening gate. Fluorescent glare streaked across the tiled concourse, carving long shadows beneath every bench. Above the fare barriers, an orange display flickered: 19:45 northbound—four minutes. A short-haired station cat crouched atop the housing of a card reader, its tail hanging in the brightness like a thin rope. Sam stepped forward; the red cross lit again. The balance had been reduced by earlier transfers. Engine vibration hummed through the metal handrails, and a squawk of synthetic vexation burst from the public-address horn. The recharge machine waited beyond a glass sheet; strip lights inside cast a ripple of reflection that trembled over the floor tiles. Sam jogged there, moonlit outlines of an old brick aqueduct visible through the footbridge windows above, then fed coins until a green bar glowed. Seconds, however, drained away.
He hurried back toward the barriers, only to see the destination code vanish and re-appear beside PLATFORM 3. That track lay beyond the footbridge, and a fresh tide of passengers already poured up the metal steps, their shadows folding over one another in the narrow stairwell. Sam paused at the landing; the cat sprang from the reader, performed a neat leap, and slipped between shoes with silent confidence. When the swell of bodies thinned, Sam matched his pace to the easing flow, sliding along the handrail while corridor lights flashed in alternating bands of glare and penumbra. At the platform door he pressed the button; the panel eased aside with a soft hiss, granting just enough space for him and, unexpectedly, the cat, which settled beneath a window. The train began to move, strip lights racing across the retreating walls. Back on the landing, two tiny paw prints shone on the dusty tile where the cat had stepped through spilled tea.
