Three deliveries had arrived in quick succession before Luke reached for the textured bucket of coral roses. His palms, still cool from the cardboard boxes, pressed around the slippery rim. He compromised by easing the heavy container onto a rubber mat near the wrapping station. Cold water fanned across the tiles and soaked a narrow ant trail heading toward the doorway. Each insect jerked away from the puddle, legs scrambling over the damp surface like scattered pepper. Outside, lighter springtime air slipped through the open door and dried the spill’s outer edge. The shifting line angled toward the warmer smell of ribbon and tissue deeper inside the shop.

A marmalade cat napping beneath the ribbon spools noticed the dark wave and sprang onto the counter. Its sudden landing jolted the metal stand, and a loose spool rolled toward Luke’s feet. The spinning cylinder brushed a stack of tissue sheets, knocking them against a low shelf of gadgets. An old pocket translator slid from that shelf, struck the floor, and opened with a sharp plastic ring. The thin sound seemed to resonate with the glass cooler door, vibrating the hanging price tags. Alarmed by the echo, the cat darted back, but Luke steadied the swaying stand. His second grip stayed lower, bracing fingers under the rim and easing the vibration.

Luke slowly exhaled through his teeth, then crouched to gather the stray tissue sheets before they soaked up the puddle. He nudged the pocket translator aside, wiped its casing with a dry towel, and returned it to the shelf. Finally, he lifted the calmer cat down onto a wicker basket filled with spare raffia, where it immediately began kneading. Only the ribbon refused to be still; a final coil of peach acetate kept rotating, drawing a spiral across the damp tile.
