Spiral on the Fogged Pane-

English 原文
The tiered shelf beside the queue held twelve identical paper trays, yet the eighth slot had been left bare, a rectangle brighter than its neighbours under the ceiling glare. Olive leaned from the line, her shadow-edge stretching across the floor stripes, and counted again. Twelve, except one. Jude, waiting behind her, lifted onto his toes while a shaft of light from the kitchen pass-through flickered against the fogged display glass. Steam drifted outward each time the oven door opened, misting the pane until the éclairs beyond became faint silhouettes. Olive pressed two fingers to the outer surface; dampness cooled her skin but the blurred view stayed. She rubbed a circle with her sleeve; moisture spread instead of clearing, and the slow queue crept forward before she finished.
By the time they reached the counter, the staff member lifted tongs, waiting. Olive wanted the new sinuous twist the shop had advertised, yet nothing behind the misted pane was clear enough to recognise. If the glass had been clear, the choice would have been easy; instead each shape merged with the next. The crowd behind pressed nearer, and a faint exhilaration fluttered among children pointing at random reflections. Another puff of hot air rolled out, thickening the condensation. Olive noticed thin streaks where earlier knuckles had carved narrow lanes through the fog. An intuitive idea followed: the same moisture that blocked sight could form windows a finger-width wide. She drew a slow spiral, and behind the cleared trail an exquisite pastry revealed its crisp curves. Jude widened the opening with one confident swipe, and the baker’s eyes tracked the glowing patch.
Tongs slipped through the gap and lifted the twist straight into a box. Cardboard walls refused to lock— their stiff corners pushed back— so Jude folded his jacket sleeve and wedged it under the lid, using its weight to hold the crease. The obstacle remained: a hazy film still coated most of the pane. Olive stepped aside with the warm box, and the line flowed on. At the same hour, in the packaging station behind the pass-through, Vance tightened a ribbon around another box and placed it on a waiting scale.
