Cool, ridged plastic pressed against the woven carpet, a baton lying just beyond the bright rectangle of sunlight. A line of warmth advanced along its smooth shell, catching the shallow spiral molded around the grip.

Cole crawled in from the adjustment zone, knees brushing fibres that scratched his shins. Ella sat near the window with a book, one hand steady on the curtain gap so the beam stayed narrow. On the sill, Zara the cat stretched, her tail tracing a calm, almost melodious sway. Cole nudged the first-bounce mirror; the reflected spot darted across the ceiling, then struck the baton and scattered. He slid the cylinder aside, yet its round body rolled back each time the floorboard flexed. The mirror refused to stand straight, its book support shifting under barely half a kilo of weight. A passing cloud dimmed the source, and the outline of the moving spot faded until only dust threads floated in pale shadow.

When sunlight returned, Cole reached for a thicker novel to brace the mirror, but pages fanned open and toppled the glass. Zara’s whiskers twitched as the beam flashed over her paws. Cole paused, fingertips tingling from the earlier scrape. The baton’s stubborn weight and perfect roundness had frustrated him, yet those same traits offered control; a gentle roll could lift or lower a corner without shaking the other stands. He placed the baton beneath the book like a slow-turning axle and rolled it a fingertip at a time. The mirror tilted in tiny increments, each shift moving the light only a hand-span on the far wall. A soft thud marked the moment the spot finally rested on the white card.

Cole exhaled, shoulders loosening, and stepped back to avoid casting a new shadow. Zara hopped down, padding after a drifting fleck. Behind them, the baton continued to pivot minutely under the book, and dust motes kept swirling through the quiet column of light.
