Sunlight glared along a wide metal clip gripping the upper edge of the watercolour sheet. Joel tapped the steel, hoping to raise the sheet a little, yet the stiff spring refused to shift. Above the drying boundary, pale rooftops he had painted earlier lay crisp and untouchable; below, a glossy wash still glowed. Sketching the distant rock outcrop had felt like a cakewalk, but trimming this border demanded finer control. At the board's uplifted corner, a bead of pigment trembled. Thea, beside him under the open-sided pavilion, kept her brush moving through wet thistle shapes blooming near the riverbank.

They moved apart when a quiet breeze slid through the pavilion, brightening one side of the paper and deepening shadows on the other. Joel carried the cloudy rinse cup toward a beam of back-lit dust where he could pour it onto a patch of grass. As water fell, tiny beads caught the glare before sinking among the stems. He refilled the cup from a jug; reflected gleam danced across the plastic rim while the liquid settled. Returning, he paused at the paint palette; several wells had dried to matte crust. A single drop from the refreshed cup loosened the blue, spreading a luminous pool across the shallow hollow. Meanwhile, Thea rummaged through the brush jar, choosing a slender bristle that would suit the rooftops once the drying line crept farther downward. A spare sheet had been pinned to the railing nearby, its blank surface catching stray shafts of light.

Minutes later, a sharper gust tilted the board forward, and the loose sheet drooped toward the floor. Joel stepped back to steady it, finding the same metal clip lying against the frame where it had fallen. The wooden edge had dried under the steady glare, and the swollen grain no longer pressed against the spring. The clip that had refused to move earlier now glided sideways without resistance. He slid it upward until the upper margin shone evenly beneath the roof’s high shadow. Joel pressed it over the edge, and the spring kept the paper flat.
