English 原文
Faye hoisted the easel upright, the wooden leg scraping softly while a lemon-sharp polish smell floated from the floor beneath the mountain diorama. A cooler breath of air leaked from a ceiling vent, mixing with the sugary mint carried by youthful classmates lining up for their field trip stamps; the blend tasted almost like iced tea on her tongue. She aimed her pencil toward the tiny log cabin turning inside the glass case, yet a cloudy skin of condensation, scented faintly of minerals, slid over the pane and blotted the view. Her sleeve smeared the moisture into wider streaks, releasing a damp wool odor and leaving the details even hazier. The three-minute timer beside the sketch corner flashed, and a distant tour group shuffled nearer, their lavender hand sanitizer fragrance drifting ahead like fog.
The timer’s beep carried a metallic tang, and the corridor narrowed as the group arrived, presenting a quiet dilemma: stay or surrender the easel. Faye’s backpack, heavy with notebooks, pressed like a physical burden against her shoulders while another droplet gathered the museum’s mixed smells—wax, mint, stone dust—and rolled down the exterior glass. She caught the drop with a tissue; graphite dust on the sheet instantly darkened, releasing a dry chalk aroma. The very dampness that had blocked her sight now turned into accidental ink. She brushed the moistened tissue across her drawing, and the shaded walls of the cabin deepened at once. More beads formed, but a staff member knelt and slid an absorbent strip under the frame, its clean linen scent muting the sharper floor polish and halting further leaks. At the same hour, on the mezzanine outside the audio-guide kiosk, Nadia waited for a headset while warm cocoa notes drifted past; above, a fresh ribbon of steam curved from her paper cup toward the ceiling vents.
