Where the Heel Found Balance-

English 原文
The empty fifth slot in the cubbyhole wall showed a bright rectangle where dust had not settled. Sage leaned closer, then turned toward the repair bench; his eyebrows knitted at the missing shoes. One black oxford waited under the overhead bulb, its heel wobbling each time light from the rotating buffing wheel flickered across the leather. Tomorrow morning its owner planned a family reunion, and the shoe needed to stand evenly beside its twin. The cobbler, Dorian, explained that four millimetres of height were missing inside the heel. Sage aimed to fill that gap. He pressed one thin cork layer into the hollow space; the heel straightened but still dipped when he let go, the glare along the counter exposing a narrow tilt.
Nell stepped through the doorway just then, the bulb above her head throwing a long silhouette across the floor. She had come to pick up a repaired boot and, as an unexpected ally, paused at Sage’s side when the shoe lurched again. The jacket slung over her arm carried a frayed leather hem; under the harsh light its thickness looked plausible for padding. Dorian clipped a strip from the exhausted end of a waxed-thread spool, tied it round the hem, and passed the bundle to Sage while Nell steadied the oxford. Sage slid the soft strip beside the first cork layer—still a whisper of shadow showed under the sole. If that cork shifted again, the heel would betray its owner during the gathering. He reached into the sole-material drawer, trimmed a wafer of rubber, and eased it inside. The heel leveled; the bright line under the shoe vanished.
A new steadiness spread through the shoe, yet the team tested it three times against the counter’s flat gleam before stepping back. Sage counted the combined inserts: cork, hem, rubber—together exactly four millimetres. Without comment, Dorian set the matching shoe beside it, and both silhouettes now matched in the overhead glow. The stitching awl lying nearby caught the glare and flashed along its spine, a brief spark that bounced from tool rack to ceiling. Sage and Nell exchanged a quick nod, already drifting toward the customer counter. Behind them, the buffing wheel kept spinning, its steady halo pulsing over the rows of cubbyholes long after their footsteps faded.
