"The yellow one is up there." Ruby stretched her arm toward the top row of cages. Bronze evening light from the window painted the wire bars in a gentle honey line. Every feather inside turned to warm amber under that glow. Ruby hoped to compare that bright bird with the quieter green cousin below during careful birdwatching. The shelf beside the cages had once been a place of solace for browsing customers. Now a burlap seed bag crowded the space. The bag was bulky and packed solid; Ruby had already tried to budge it earlier, yet its weight kept it rooted. When she pulled harder, the bag swung, nudged a low crate of wooden perches, and the crate tipped. Slender dowels scattered across the rubber mat in a short, dusty cascade. The perches had been stacked loosely, so they dispersed in every direction.

Heath, stacking food tins nearby, bent quickly to pick up the pieces before they rolled under the aquariums. A worker on the shared step-stool continued rinsing a filter, so the metal platform remained occupied. If the stool were free, Ruby would reach the cage easily. She glanced at the unreachable stool and then at the stubborn seed bag. Its very heaviness had blocked her path, yet that same steadiness offered a new idea. She signaled Heath, and without speech they began to collaborate. He steadied the crate against the shelf to halt further sliding, while she eased the seed bag flat on the floor.

The burlap mound stayed firm when she stepped onto it, granting her the extra height she needed. From that new horizon she compared the birds, noticing the yellow one preening under the lamp while the green one slept. Beyond the partition, a snail inside the largest tank pressed its orange shell against the glass. It glided downward in a slow silver trail toward the sand.
