Tess crouched, guiding the long cardboard cylinder onto the ribbed rubber floor as the idling engine thrummed through the metal frame. Condensation tapped against the window beside them. The overhead fan laid a thin whir over station echoes. The cardboard protected their model riverbank, a project that had already soaked many evenings with paint, glue, and quiet dedication. To pin the cylinder still, Dorian twisted his jacket tight and wedged it between the tube and the cold seat bracket. Across the aisle, a door buzzer pulsed every few seconds while passengers tapped cards at the gate behind the driver. Leander, sitting one row ahead, lifted an eyebrow at the chorus, yet the bass hum of the engine swallowed the lighter sounds.

When the doors hissed shut, vibration shook the jacket loose, and the tube rolled, thumping like a slow drum against the bracket. Dorian grabbed his teammate's folded umbrella, slid its tip between tube and floor, and the cloth ribs scraped in protest. He next shoved a stack of pamphlets, printed on slick paper, right after the umbrella. Their glossy edges rustled in uneven layers that pressed harder than expected against the tube's side. A sharp turn jolted the bus; the umbrella sprang free, struck upward, and knocked a metal lunchbox off a neighbouring seat. The box clattered down the aisle, slid under the boot of an angler with a folded rod, and spun toward the door.

Seeing the rolling lunchbox, Tess planted her foot across the aisle while Dorian yanked his jacket back out from the crowded wedge. With the middle padding gone, space opened, the tube dropped lower, and the pamphlets relaxed enough for the umbrella to sink. The lunchbox caught against Tess's shoe, tipped, and rolled back toward its seat, ending the noisy chain without another scrape. For a breath, only the even drumming of wheels against track ribs traveled through the cabin's silver panels. Bright panels from a recent rejuvenation glinted where the lunchbox had brushed them, hinting at the network's constant commitment to tidy coaches. A faint humming rolled through the floor panels and drifted upward between their shoes.
