Joy pressed a blue stick against the dry upper board, but the lower strokes blurred into damp grey. The rough surface nudged through her wrist, and tiny grains shook down onto the wooden ledge where a bundle of coloured chalk rolled shoulder-to-shoulder. She leaned back, ribs expanding, then reached high again; the sweeping arc of her kite tail formed a bright statement that cut across the darker shade under the shelter. Several earlier stripes had been smoothed by the felt eraser, yet new drizzle marked the exposed half, turning fresh lines into pale ribbons before her elbow finished its swing. She longed to extend the tail to the pavement reflection, though the slippery patches below warned her ankles to keep steady. One careful observation—water dots gathering inside the board’s tiny holes—told her the lower section would resist any clean colour for minutes.

A rubber thud broke her rhythm. A stray playground ball bounced against her calf, veered, and skidded toward the street. She sprinted after it, soles sliding on wet grit, and scooped the ball before it reached the curb; by the time she returned, a small cascade had begun without her. The blue stick she had left vibrating on the ledge had inched forward, nudged a white stub, and both pieces clinked into the eraser. The eraser tipped, fell, and slapped a shallow puddle; water leapt up, speckling the blurred lower kite and carrying chalk dust in drifting streaks. Joy stepped onto the eraser to halt its spin, then lifted the soggy felt and pressed it flat against the splash. Instead of wiping, she dabbed, letting the wet pad spread a cloudy wave that softened the ruined tail. She moved with slow, even pressure, shoulders dropping as appreciation for the new texture replaced earlier plans; the smear looked like wind under the fabric of an unseen kite.

When she finally stepped back, milky swirls travelled downward, leaving fresh runnels of blue and white that slid over the pitted surface toward the puddle below.

突然的橡膠撞擊聲打斷了她的節奏。一顆操場上的球彈到她的小腿，又偏向街道。她衝去追球，鞋底在濕沙上滑動，及時在路邊前撈起球；她回來時，黑板已悄然啟動一連串變化。她留在筆槽邊仍微微震動的藍粉筆向前移動，頂到一截白筆，兩支小筆敲到板擦。板擦傾倒，落進淺水窪，水花濺上模糊的風箏尾，帶著粉筆灰形成漂浮痕跡。喬伊把腳踩在板擦上止住旋轉，抬起濕透的氈面輕壓水痕。她沒有擦掉，而是點拍，讓濕墊展開雲狀波紋，把受損尾巴柔化。她動作緩而均勻，肩膀放鬆，對新質感的欣賞取代了原先的計畫；那抹模糊看起來像隱形風箏下的風。

當她終於退後，乳白色漩渦向下流動，藍與白的新痕在布滿小孔的黑面上滑行，朝著下方水窪移去。
