Thermometer and the Vinegar Splash-

English 原文
Vernon slid a warm jar across the prep counter, its rim knocking a hollow ring against another waiting glass. Behind him the copper kettle murmured, each bubble’s wet pop marking time while steam climbed and tapped moisture onto the fogged window. Colette stood near the stove; the gas flame gave a steady hiss, yet her hands stayed back so the darkened spoon carried no scorch. The task held two tracks: reach perfect set before the mixture grew stubborn, and keep every jar gently heated for pouring. Sugar crystals had crept up the spoon handle and crackled when he scraped them away, clearing the path for the next deliberate stir.
When a deeper pop echoed from the kettle, Vernon dipped the spoon and let a ruby drop branch out across the chilled plate. He counted thirty silent beats; then a thin skin wrinkled, the first sign that old kitchen wisdom confirmed without words. Trusting the sign, he nodded once, and Colette turned the dial lower, the flame shrinking with a short hiss. Lower heat rescued the thickness, yet the lull robbed the jar station of rising warmth, and faint cracks answered as glass cooled too quickly. A tiny ping from the nearest lid carried along the row like a cautious bell.
Before he chose his next move, the thermometer slipped from the misty ledge, clattering into the sterilising basin and splashing vinegar across cool tiles. The sudden racket urged him to explore possibilities quickly, and the rubber-gripped tongs became his chosen tool for a swift compromise. He lifted each jar, hovering it over the kettle mouth, allowing bursts of fruity vapour to expand horizons of heat around the fragile glass. The returning warmth restored flexibility, though the cooler rims would never shine unblemished; tiny ripples marked the hurried rescue like confetti after festivity. Colette’s shoes gave a single squeak while Vernon kept the ladle poised above the final jar, syrupy drops ticking against its inner curve.
