She had studied the fallen trunk from several angles before choosing the mossy top as her quickest bridge. Zander waited beside the root plate, fingers tapping a wet branch, their backpacks piled on the approach side. A quartet of finches broke into gleeful chirps above, yet the song vanished under the louder patter of rain. Ruby stepped onto the trunk; water shimmered over the moss like oil, and her right foot skated sideways. She crouched suddenly, palms spread, the spongy layer squeezing out brownish drops that darkened her gloves. The first attempt left a faint streak across the bark, but no solid progress toward the far side.

While she regained balance, a sudden beam slipped through the canopy gap and painted the trunk with golden heat. The surface warmed quickly; vapor lifted in thin wisps, touched the cooler leaves, and condensed into heavier droplets. Those new drops fell straight onto the stripe she had cleared, spreading a fresh glaze across her chosen foothold. Ruby stiffened her shoulders, shifted her stance, pressing her heel instead of her toe, hoping the flatter angle would bite the bark. The mud had been churned by earlier hikers, and a slick skin now floated over it like a thin film. Her foot slid again, though only a finger’s width this time, leaving tiny ridges in the glowing moss. Above the root wall, a quick rustle sounded like a brief dispute between two unseen squirrels over the same branch.

Ruby scanned the debris zone and chose a straighter branch whose bark still clung despite the rain. She dragged it to the trunk, wedged one end against a knot, and raised the other like a narrow gutter. If the drops kept striking that spot, the crossing would stay impossible, so the improvised channel aimed them aside. Water now ran along the branch, dripped into the puddle below, and left her chosen ridge almost dry. Zander lifted an eyebrow at the simple fix, the gleeful finches echoing his quiet whistle from the canopy. Ruby planted her boot on the ridge once more and was swinging her leg over the trunk when another droplet sparkled mid-air.
