Baskets After the Ladder Groaned-

English 原文
A wicker basket, a squealing wheelbarrow pedal, and the three-rung ladder waited beneath the second pear tree, while dry leaves hissed above like loose paper on a windy porch. Iris placed the ladder feet on a firmer patch and listened to the distant waterfall-like roar of traffic beyond the hedgerow, its low rush mixing with the constant wasp hum. The morning picking had felt almost like a ceremony; pears galore had plopped onto grass with dull pats. Now only four bright ones hovered near the branch tip, just out of reach. She climbed the top rung. The ladder creaked, then tipped sideways as a root cavity collapsed. A soft gasp escaped her lips, but her knees bent and her shoulders leaned left, redistributing weight until the wood stopped moaning.
The branch still rocked away, so Iris adapted: she stretched, toes wavering, arms long, spine stiff, letting her balance shift the ladder a finger’s width closer. Wood sighed again, yet this time the rung held. Her fingers brushed the nearest pear, and with a sharp twist she freed it; three more followed, tapping her forearm before landing in the open basket below. The success came with an unwanted sound: thump-thump-crush. Her boot had nudged the basket edge during the reach, rolling earlier fruit against the fresh ones. A wet squelch rose, and sweet juice beaded through the canvas liner.
Silas, who had been sorting windfalls nearby, looked over as the ladder’s groan faded. If Iris kept filling the bruised pile, fewer clean pears would remain for table fruit. She slid down, lifted two dented pears, and passed them to him. He smiled at the rich scent and slipped them into his own basket, already meant for cooking. Together they rearranged the remaining load: unmarked pears on one side, softer ones cushioned by leaves on the other. Breeze fluttered through the canopy, rattling empty stems overhead, while Iris steadied the basket containing the unblemished pears, and Silas tucked the softer, bruised ones into his own for tomorrow’s sauce.
