"Why is the blue one stuck?" Keane tapped the glass, and glare from the window cut across the water. A mantis perched on the warm sill, its shadow narrow and sharp against the pane. He wanted every colour to reach the leafy tops together, so he noted their heights with a wooden ruler. The experiment had been prepared early; each stalk had been cut on a diagonal by the adult before breakfast. Condensation dimmed the surface of the blue glass, hinting at colder air drifting through the half-open frame.

The draft slipped along the table, cooling the blue glass further, and the dye clung stubbornly near the base. To resolve the delay, Keane shifted his whole torso, turning into a living screen between window and glass. Shadow pooled across the towel, and for nearly a minute the blue column crawled a millimetre higher. A single bead leaked over the rim, rolled through a honeycomb hollow in the towel, and vanished into deeper darkness. Keane had tended the row for half an hour already, his fingertips tracing the damp border in steady circles.

Then the curtain billowed again, and the cold thread of air curved around Keane’s back, stalling the blue rise once more. He repeated the block yet bent his shoulder a few degrees, letting glare bounce onto the surface while sealing the gap. The subtle shift worked; the dye edged upward again, bright under the concentrated light beam. Before he could relax, the mantis glided from the sill and landed on the celery crown. Its long legs traced a bewildered zigzag that sliced bright lines through the shadow beneath. Keane jerked back a step, lifted the stalk to protect the visitor, and a droplet flung outward, splashing blue across the towel. After the insect retreated to the sill, uneven stripes continued their slow climb inside the glass. Blue marks shaped like tiny claws now striped the honeycomb towel below, proof of the short airborne journey.

窗簾又鼓了起來，冰涼氣流繞過奇恩背後，藍色再度停滯。他維持阻擋姿勢，肩膀微微旋轉，讓反射光落在液面，同時堵住縫隙。這細小調整奏效；染料在集中的光束下再次緩慢上升。還來不及鬆口氣，螳螂從窗台滑翔到芹菜頂端，長腳在陰影裡劃出迷亂的折線。奇恩猛然後退一步，舉起莖保護這位訪客，一滴水隨即彈射，將藍漬濺上毛巾。螳螂退回窗台後，杯中不均的條紋繼續向上延伸。毛巾上多了幾道細小藍痕，像微型爪印，見證那段短短的空中旅程。
