A pale rectangle marked the low stone ledge where Quinn’s slim sketch board had rested during yesterday’s drizzle. Curious, he crouched beside the ledge and patted the cool surface, meeting nothing but damp grit. He needed the board to trace the leaf mosaic spread across the path before the drying line erased it. A plank, thick and rough from recent carpentry near the park shed, lay over part of the mosaic like a lid. Quinn tried heaving the plank aside; mud clung under its edges, and the soaked timber refused to shift. Behind him, his aunt swung slowly in a striped hammock, passing the brief leisure with a humming tune.

While he struggled, a steady drip from the branch overhead struck the main puddle and sent rings outward. One ring touched the plank, lifted a rim of mud, and a thin sheet of cloudy water crawled over his boots. The wave smeared his open page, leaving a vexed tangle of brown streaks across the half-drawn outline. Most lines had been carefully shaded, but the fresh stain had been spread by water faster than ink could dry. Quinn paused; the mud felt sticky between his fingers, gripping paper fibres as firmly as paste. If the mud were drier, it would crumble, but the lingering rain kept it thick and helpful. He pressed a layer of the thick mud onto the plank, then laid five bright wet leaves over it. The adhesive grip held every vein flat against the wood like coins under fresh wax.

He lowered clean paper onto the leaves and smoothed it with both palms, feeling ridges rise beneath the sheet. A final drip landed, but the plank’s weight spread the shock, and no ripple reached his new press. When he peeled the page free, clear embossed shapes remained, and the original mud margin kept shrinking toward the pattern’s ghost. A stray breeze carried the scent of crushed thyme from the garden plot, and a tiny sprig clung to the print. The green fragment slid off the edge and skated across a shallow rivulet toward the drip zone, spinning in slow circles.
