English 原文
York dragged his fingertip across the lower pane, carving a smooth river through the cold, fogged glass. He aimed to sketch a tiny harbor scene, using the warm tea cup on the sill as measure for each boat. Outside, torrential rain burst against the window, and every cleared line revealed flashing gutters and the blur of rushing wheels. A droplet collected at the top edge, rolled downward, and sliced a wet channel straight through the freshly drawn pier. York bent for the cloth, yet during that brief dip the drip divided, smearing two docks before he straightened again. The cloth had been placed on the sill earlier, already damp from earlier wipes that left faint arcs along the frame edge. He paused to scrutinize the damage, thumb tracing blurred shorelines that stretched like melted candle wax. Beyond the glass, a drainpipe gurgled steadily, marking time like a slow drum behind the constant hiss of rain.
His next stroke squeaked sharply, and the sound lifted Grant, the family spaniel, from his warm rug beside the radiator. The startled dog gave a gleeful bark and bumped Lena the cat, whose striped tail flicked in reflex as she sprang upward. Landing on the sill, she pressed damp paws against the breathing zone, spraying droplets that raced downward and swallowed half the harbor. York raised the folded cloth as a soft barrier, guiding the cat away while the dog circled, nails tapping on the boards. Steam from the shifted tea cup drifted higher, fogging the newly cleared space and thinning the remaining outlines even further. If the curtain brushes the pane again, the lines will vanish, so he tucked its heavy fabric behind a nearby chair. He whispered, 'I confess, the window looks worse now,' then slid the cup farther along the sill to calm the steam. Thin pawprints, jagged rivers, and a single droplet train streaked the glass, each trail still creeping toward the darker wood below.
