Most of the glass jars waited upright in a neat line, but one silver lid rested at an odd angle. Golden steam drifted from the copper kettle, turning the window into amber while Eve watched the fruit darken. Kay gripped the first warm jar at the station, planning to fill and seal it before the mixture grew too thick. If the syrup cooled too much, it would thicken like honey and refuse to pour cleanly. The kettle kept bubbling like a tiny jump on the stove, each pop sending sticky specks toward her sleeves. She twisted the crooked lid, but syrup on the thread made the metal slip instead of locking.

To simulate the vacuum seal, Kay pressed the centre, held her breath, and counted slowly to five. The lid sprang upward again, releasing a sigh that fogged her glasses and proved the jar still leaked sweet air. Behind her, a forgotten jump rope slid from the window ledge, swinging across the cool tiles when a breeze pushed the door. Kay stepped over the looping cord, nudged the door shut with her elbow, and turned back as a foam crown rose. From her lower perspective beside the counter, the ruby liquid looked thicker already, warning her that every second counted.

Kay wiped the jar rim with a warm cloth, yet sugar crystals clung and glimmered like crushed sand. She waited through three slow breaths before trying again, letting the syrup cool just enough to thicken against the glass. This time her twist matched the kettle’s quiet rhythm; the lid turned with steady pressure instead of hurried force. The thermometer had been placed on the window ledge earlier, yet its needle still lagged behind the plate test. The warm air around her smelled like caramelised berries mingled with faint vinegar from the steaming basin. Eve glanced over, nodded once, and ladled another scoop for Kay, trusting the new seal to hold.

Somewhere outside, a sparrow landed on the sill, its claws tapping once against the glass before it fluttered away. From the same perspective, the jars now formed two rows; the once-crooked one gleamed level with its neighbours. Kay lifted her spoon absent-mindedly, watching a final thread of jam stretch and break over the drip tray. The lid that had been crooked now sat flat against the threads, and a thin ruby bead cooled beside it.

窗外一隻麻雀落在窗檯，爪子敲一下玻璃又飛走。從同樣的視角望去，罐子排成兩列；先前那個歪蓋子如今與鄰座齊平發亮。Kay 不自覺提起木匙，看著最後一絲果醬在線上拉長再斷在滴水盤上。曾經歪斜的蓋子此刻平穩地貼合螺紋，旁邊一道細細的紅寶石條痕漸漸冷卻。
