Heath knelt inside the half-built snow wall, packing another brick in a plastic mould while his breath floated close to his scarf. Dim daylight slipped through the falling flakes and threw long shadows across the fort interior; every boot-stomp pushed back a darker edge where light did not reach. Behind him, Cleo lifted wetter snow from the fence bank, her boots sinking until only the tops showed. The hush of falling snow left room for a brief reverie; Heath watched crystals swirl between shadow and glare before packing another scoop. He tipped the mould: the block kept its sharp sides, yet a narrow crack split its centre, already threatening to widen under the next row.

To seal the fault, he trudged toward the porch supply step. The bucket had been filled earlier with tap water that now lay silent beneath a thin ice skin; he broke the surface with a gloved knuckle, but floating shards made the scoop uneven. A short metallic beep cut across the neighborhood; a delivery van lurched into view and halted by the gate. The driver slid a small parcel onto the step and rolled away before Heath straightened. He wiped sleet from the label and stacked the box on a sheltered outcrop of brick beside the door. The pause stretched while he tucked loose tape and flexed stiff fingers; meanwhile, flakes layered the wall top and whitened those mysterious bumps near the fence.

When Heath stepped back inside the circle, light had shifted; a brighter shaft bounced off the shovel blade and slipped through the doorway gap. Fresh weight of snow bent the cracked brick, tilting the wall ends inward. He braced the right side with one elbow and reached for new snow, but the near ground lay bare and slick where earlier footprints had compressed it. Forced to dig deeper toward the fence, he brushed the bumps with a mitten. Loose snow slid aside, revealing the leathery tops of a hidden mushroom patch—no clods after all. The denser, damp earth beneath the caps offered firmer packing snow. He scooped it, pressed a reinforcing block, and thumbed a wet groove along its edge, leaving a dark frozen stripe that caught the slanting glow.

希斯回到圓圈內時，光線已改變；更亮的光束打在鏟子上，又穿過門口空隙。新增的雪重壓彎裂開的磚，牆端向內傾斜。他用一隻手肘頂住右側牆身，另一手伸向新雪，但附近地面因早前的腳印被壓得裸露又發滑，只好向柵欄方向挖得更深。他手套掃過那些凸點，鬆雪滑開，露出一片皮質頂的小蘑菇，再也不是想像中的雪塊。蘑菇下潮濕的硬雪更適合壓磚。他舀起這些雪，壓上加固磚塊，並在邊緣劃出一道濕溝，留下一條黑色冰痕，在斜射光裡清晰可見。
