Stone Lines on the Hook-

English 原文
Graphite scraping against coarse paper rose from the mid-dock shade zone; Miles had already spread his sketchbook there, pencil moving in a quick, dry rhythm while Cruz set his small rod beside the willow roots. Between the rattling reeds and the soft bump of the mooring rope, two concerns guided Cruz’s ears: the line had developed a loose loop that might tangle, and the bait tub on shore held only one quarter of its worms after last weekend’s practice. He persuaded the loop to lie flat by rolling the reel backward; the spool obeyed with a low chirr, and the first cast plopped neatly beyond the drifting shadow.
A muffled thud came back instead of the expected glug— the hook stuck under weed. Gentle lifts could not persuade fraction of the knotting strands to release, and each lift let water slap louder against the posts. Cruz laid the rod down, picked up a thin branch from the shoreline, and pushed it under the surface as a lever. The branch creaked, the weed gave, and a stone the size of a coin rose wobbling on the hook. Its surface carried a shell-shaped fossil, lines clear as a thumbprint. The surprise lasted only a heartbeat; the worm was gone, and the already low supply had decreased again. Water lapped steadily while Miles hummed, unaware.
Cruz walked back to the shore equipment area. The tub that had been one quarter full now showed two pale worms curling among damp soil. He tore each remaining worm into a smaller fraction, wrapped one sliver around the hook, and returned to the shade. The lighter bait swayed in the breeze, but a faint splash suggested smaller fish still noticed its scent. Miles’s pencil paused at the sound yet stayed on paper. Behind Cruz, the bait tub that had been crowded at noon displayed a dark ring where the soil no longer reached the rim.
